‘Groundhog Day Movie’: Andie MacDowell reveals Bill Murray’s on-set shenanigans

'Groundhog Day Movie' Andie MacDowell reveals Bill Murray's on-set shenanigans

On the set of the 1993 comedy classic Groundhog Day, life imitated art for Andie Macdowell.

MacDowell was seduced by her wonderful co-star, Bill Murray, just as her Pittsburgh news producer Rita Hanson finally falls for the time-looping charms of cynical weatherman Phil Connors while he is stuck reliving the same Groundhog Day in Punxsutawney.

“The interesting thing about Bill is that you never know what to anticipate from him. “He’s a one-of-a-kind individual,” MacDowell said in a 2019 Role Recall interview with Yahoo Entertainment (watch above, with Groundhog Day starting at 3:30). “He’s a fantastic artist.” Fresh. Every time he does a scene, it’s new and fresh, and he’s always adding nuances. Off-camera, he’s just as odd, if not more so. He’s just being himself.”

Murray stories abound from here to the farthest reaches of the internet, and MacDowell has a few from their time together to share.

She recalls that “people would come from all over to see him.” “On Friday nights, he’d say, ‘I’m sorry, folks,’ he’d say. On Fridays, I don’t do autographs.’ And it made no difference where they came from. But the strange thing is that people accepted it because of how he said it. They were not enraged by him. Nobody was yelling at him or calling him names.”

Murray and MacDowell were once filming a scenario in a car together when Murray stepped on the gas and ejected them from the set.

She says, “He just went off.” “And I was like, ‘What are you doing?'” says the narrator. Bill, where are we going? ‘Oh, I simply thought we’d go for a ride,’ he says. So we just walked away for maybe ten to fifteen minutes.”
