Everything We Know About This Year’s ‘Ghostbusters’ Sequel ‘Spirits Unleashed’

Spirits Unleashed, this year’s ‘Ghostbusters’ sequel,: Everything We Know

The Ghostbusters franchise has recently seen a lot of supernatural activity. Sony recently revealed a number of forthcoming projects, including animated television series, video games, and live-action sequels.

The Story of Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed

Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed will act as both a prequel to last year’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife and a sequel to Ghostbusters 4 (2023), which will take place in the regular Ghostbusters chronology (although it’s likely that characters from the 2016 reboot will appear).

The Ecto-1 is driven back to its proper location in New York City by Winston Zeddemore (Ernie Hudson), Ray Stantz (Dan Aykroyd), and Peter Venkman (Bill Murray) in the 2021 movie, which also stars McKenna Grace as Phoebe, Finn Wolfhard as Trevor, and Paul Rudd as Gary Grooberson.

In the post-credits scene, it is revealed that Winston is reopening the well-known firehouse and plans to usher in a new age of ghost hunting there. But just as the scene comes to a close, we notice the Ecto-Containment Unit’s light glowing. The story picks up here in Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed.
Four Ghostbusters characters who are new to the franchise are featured in the game. Although Logan Kim recently urged the producers to look at Ghostbusters: The Video Game (2009) for inspiration, it is unlikely that Ghostbusters 4 would draw its inspiration from this game.

Trailer for Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed

Below is the Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed official trailer.

On YouTube, there are a lot of gameplay walkthroughs in addition to the video mentioned above. However, it’s definitely advisable to stay away from them, just like you would a hostile ghost, if you want to be shocked.

The cast of Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed

Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Ernie Hudson, and Annie Potts all made appearances in Ghostbusters: The Video Game as Peter Venkman, Ray Stantz, Egon Spengler, Winston Zeddemore, and Janine Melnitz, respectively. Therefore, it is understandable why this title is the franchise’s fan favourite.
Sadly, not all of the original cast will be present in Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed, but Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson will. Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021), it’s safe to assume, mainly relies on nostalgia to win over fans, and the future game appears to be no different.

Up to four Ghostbusters can be controlled in the game, however it has been said that you can create your own Ghostbuster. But it’s unclear if you’ll be able to “unlock” or even “create” existing Ghostbuster characters.
In any case, let’s hope for some tributes to people like Harold Ramis, who passed away in 2014, and Ivan Reitman, the filmmaker of Ghostbusters (1984) and Ghostbusters II (1989), who sadly passed away earlier this year.

Gameplay for Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed

You can play as either a Ghostbuster or a ghost in the “asymmetrical” multiplayer game Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed, which supports up to four players. The physical characteristics of the ghost can also be changed, and you can even design your own Ghostbuster.
Ghosts are seen from a third-person perspective while controlling the Ghostbusters is in first-person. Although the game is asymmetrical, you can also decide to team up with other players to battle an AI-controlled ghost. The list of achievements and awards for the game was just released.

Platforms for Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed

Release Date for Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed

IllFonic’s CEO, Charles Brungardt, has confirmed the game’s release date. “The response from Ghostbusters fans has blown us away,” he remarked. Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed’s release date and pre-order launch feel like an out-of-body experience, and we can’t wait for everyone to have that same experience on Tuesday, October 18.
So on October 18, Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed will be available. And the official website now allows you to place a pre-order for your copy.

The fifth live-action Ghostbusters film will now be released on December 20, 2023, according to other Ghostbusters canon. A forthcoming animated film and animated television show are also available.

Next year, Dark Horse Publishing will release a new limited edition comic book that will come after Ghostbusters: Afterlife. The comic book rights were previously owned by IDW Publishing, and their storylines included characters from the 2016 reboot.
