Congress Votes To Raise The Debt Ceiling, Punting The Next Fight To 2023

The House voted to increase the amount of money that the government can borrow by $2.5 trillion. The House voted 221 to 209 in order to avoid default.

Congress approved a measure that means they will not have to talk about the debt limit for a while. This is good because Congress might fight and not agree with each other. The president controls Congress, but the next presidential election will change what happens.

Rep. Adam Kinzinger of Illinois was the only Republican to vote for this measure.

This year, Congress did not have to face a threat. The leaders of the Senate, Chuck Schumer, and Mitch McConnell figured out how to pass the debt limit increase without Republicans threatening to filibuster it.

The Senate voted Tuesday afternoon.

The House will have to decide if they want to pass the bill or not.

Lawmakers are in the middle of a race to get done lots of work. They have been fighting, but they found agreements for some things. For example, they made an agreement about how much money people will pay in taxes and when the government has to borrow more money. Lawmakers also agreed on another law about what type of jobs soldiers can do when they are not at war.

Democrats want to pass President Joe Biden’s $2 trillion Build Back Better legislation before the monthly child tax credit program expires.
