Dna Testing Is Stopped at Miami Valley Regional Crime Lab

Ohio’s DAYTON (CSU) — DNA samples collected in Dayton’s downtown will no longer be tested by the Miami Valley Regional Crime Laboratory. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigations has imposed additional limits, among other modifications that Dayton police say they must implement (BCI).

According to Dayton police, their main attention is on 170 samples that were in the crime lab and were to be processed but were halted right away because of the shutdown. Currently, a temporary back up at BCI may be caused by both new and old samples.

Dayton Police Major Brian Johns stated, “We don’t really have another alternative; it’s more of a bother to get there, but BCI has been excellent with us.

Although BCI is free to use, Major Johns stated that they will need to spend for petrol and people to drive the samples twice weekly to London, which is outside of Columbus. In addition, he anticipates more modifications to occur.

The amount of samples that may be submitted is currently capped, according to Maj. Johns. “Touch DNA, Miami Valley would do it for every case we wanted to, but only specific instances that BCI will perform Touch DNA for,” he said.

According to the Montgomery County coroner, the inability to find a capable technical leader for two years was the main factor in the decision to stop DNA testing at the crime lab. The position is necessary for the lab to fulfil accreditation requirements. In contrast to state laboratories that get government money, the lab has a fee-for-service business model. So, it is reliant on a fluctuating revenue.

According to Montgomery County Coroner Dr. Kent Harshbarger, “people searching for employment sometimes might see that sort of commercial model and desire to accept a pure government post with more security.” “Even though it’s still a government position, we rely on law enforcement for funding.”
