1 Soldier Dead, 9 Injured After Lightning Strike at Army Base in Georgia

A lightning strike caused one U.S. Army Reserve soldier to perish and nine others to sustain injuries at Fort Gordon, Georgia, according to a base official who talked to ABC News. According to base spokeswoman Anne Bowman, “Fort Gordon confirms with a heavy heart that one of the soldiers hurt in the lightning strike this afternoon passed away from their injuries.” After notifying the next of kin, no name will be disclosed.

According to Bowman, the event happened at Training Area 26 at 11:10 a.m. during a time of poor weather, and the troops “received injuries linked with a lightning strike at one of their training zones.” Bowman had said to ABC News, “We know there were injuries, but we don’t know the degree of those injuries.

According to Augusta ABC station WJBF, Fort Gordon’s Department of Emergency Services and EMS arrived on the site right away.

According to Bowman, the soldiers were transferred to the base’s Dwight David Eisenhower Medical Center for treatment.
