Vancouver Police Officers Shoot and Kill Man They Say Was Armed with Knife

Officers of the Vancouver Police Department shoot and kill a man they claim was armed with a knife.

After responding to allegations of a disturbance with a weapon at a home in the 13200 block of Northeast 59th Street, Vancouver police officers shot and killed a man early Sunday morning.

According to authorities, a homeowner contacted 911 at 12:25 a.m. to report that a man they knew was armed with knives inside the house. The resident and several others, including two children, were alleged to have barricaded themselves inside their beds, according to authorities.

Officials said the individuals, including the two children, were able to flee through windows after police arrived. Police claimed they smelt things burning inside the residence and discovered a man armed with a knife outside.

After the man attacked them with the knife, policemen used a less-lethal 40mm launcher, which fires foam-tipped projectiles, but they were unable to deescalate the situation, according to police. The man was subsequently shot and killed by police, who died after being taken to a local hospital, according to officials.

After the shooting, four Vancouver police officers were placed on critical incident leave, which is usual procedure after law enforcement shootings. Police did not specify how many bullets were fired or which police fired their weapons.

The individual who was shot and murdered has yet to be named by police.

The Southwest Washington Independent Investigative Response Team, led by the Clark County Sheriff’s Office, is investigating the incident.
