The Witcher's Yennefer Actress Reads Passage From Blood of Elves

Yennefer, the Witcher’s actress, reads a passage from Blood of Elves.

Anya Chalotra, the actress who plays Yennefer, reads a line from Andrzej Sapkowski’s Blood of Elves, which inspired a moment in The Witcher Season 2. The Witcher, based on Sapkowski’s novels and strongly inspired by CD Projekt’s video games, was one of Netflix’s most popular episodes when it debuted in 2019. Season 1 adapts storylines from The Last Wish and Sword of Destiny, introducing Geralt of Rivia (Henry Cavill), Ciri of Cintra (Freya Allan), and Yennefer of Vengerberg over three eras (Chalotra).

The Witcher depicts the story of its titular mutant, who traverses the Continent fighting monsters for money. Geralt and his ilk are not well-liked in the world and are generally ostracized everywhere they go. However, before meeting the magician, Yennefer, Geralt befriends the bard Jaskier (Joey Batey) throughout Season 1. Yennefer, like Geralt, considers herself an outcast on the Continent, owing to her half-Elf heritage, which led her to be born with a crooked spine and partial facial paralysis. After meeting a djinn and making a “final wish,” the couple falls in love but have a falling out before the end of season 1. Geralt eventually discovers his Child of Surprise, Ciri, in the season 1 finale, as Yennefer unleashes her flaming mayhem on Nilfgaardian soldiers at Sodden.

Chalotra reads a 5-minute passage from the novel Blood of Elves, which The Witcher season 2 is based on/inspired by, in a fantastic video uploaded by The Witcher Netflix on YouTube. In the chapter, Yennefer saves Jaskier (or Dandelion in the novels) from danger. Check out the video below:

Following the Battle of Sodden Hill, Yennefer loses her power in the act. In season 2, episode 5, “Turn Your Back,” a fire mage kidnaps Jaskier and interrogates the bard about Geralt’s location in order to find Ciri. In contrast to the preceding extract, in which Yennefer utilizes her powers to release Jaskier, the magician pretends to be a drunken wife before spitting alcohol at the “fire f—ker,” scorching his face and liberating Jaskier. Season 2’s numerous alterations to the original material include Yennefer and Jaskier’s escapades in the city of Oxenfurt.

Geralt and Ciri journey to Kaer Morhen in The Witcher Season 2 like they did in Blood of Elves. Yennefer doesn’t meet the duo until episode 6, “Dear Friend,” after which she contemplates surrendering Ciri to Voleth Meir/the Deathless Mother in order to regain her magic—something that doesn’t happen in the novels and surely ruins their renowned mother/daughter bond. The Wild Hunt/Wraiths of Morhogg, the White Flame, the Elves, and the Brotherhood of Sorcerers are all hunting Ciri, as revealed in the season 2 finale. As the story adapts Time of Contempt, Yennefer will try to tutor Ciri and earn her trust in season 3. Until then, fans may catch up on Sapkowski’s eight novels, perhaps through further readings from cast members.
