Jackson, 51, joins a court with a 6-3 conservative majority and joins the liberal bloc of the court. Six days after the Supreme Court overturned the 1973 Roe v. Wade precedent that legalised abortion statewide, she was sworn in as President Joe Biden’s replacement for departing liberal Justice Stephen Breyer. 83-year-old Breyer, the oldest member of the Supreme Court, announced his retirement on Thursday.

Last year, Vice President Joe Biden named District of Columbia Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Shirley Jackson to the bench after she served eight years as a federal district court judge. Biden was on his way back to Washington from the NATO meeting in Madrid when the event took place.
Jackson, like the three conservative justices nominated by Trump’s Republican predecessor, is young enough to serve for decades in a lifetime position.. During the inauguration, Chief Justice John Roberts said, “I am glad to welcome Justice Jackson to the court and to our common calling.”
It was a 53-47 vote, with three Republicans joining the Democrats in approving Jackson. There will be no change in the court’s ideological makeup with Jackson’s appointment.
Confirmation of a Black woman to the Supreme Court of the United States has taken 232 years and 115 previous appointments, Jackson stated at an April 8 gathering commemorating her confirmation. That’s true, though.
It is a goal of Vice President Biden to increase the number of women and minorities in the federal judiciary. Biden’s promise to nominate a black woman to the Supreme Court was realised with Jackson’s nomination. The Supreme Court now has four women on the bench for the first time.

A conservative-leaning majority of the court issued its final two opinions of this term Thursday, including one that limits the federal government’s authority over sweeping carbon emission standards from power plants.
Jackson joins a liberal bloc that has been outvoted in multiple significant rulings this term, not only on abortion rights but on gun rights, increasing religious liberties and other concerns.
Jackson will take part in arguments for the first time in the upcoming term of the court, which will begin in October. Conservative justices have an opportunity to terminate affirmative action programmes employed by schools and universities in their admissions processes to increase their enrolment of Black and Hispanic students in order to achieve campus diversity in a major case that will be heard this term.
