(CSU) TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA – In Florida, February is designated as “Hit-and-Run Awareness Month,” and the number of incidents reported increased in 2021.

There were 108,155 hit-and-runs reported. This was a 17 percent rise over the previous year. 304 people died in the year 2021. This was an increase from the previous year’s figure of 257.

In addition, pedestrians and cyclists accounted for 70% of hit-and-run fatalities in 2021, with 169 pedestrians and 45 cyclists killed. In 2020, hit-and-run accidents claimed the lives of 140 pedestrians and 27 bicyclists.

“In Florida, hit-and-run collisions and fatalities are on the rise, wreaking havoc on families and communities,” said Terry L. Rhodes, Executive Director of the Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles Division. “Drivers who abandon the scene of a collision that causes property damage, injury, or death are not just breaching the law; they are demonstrating a callous disrespect for other people’s lives and property.” Stay on the scene and call for assistance; you never know who you might save.”
