Woman Charged After Fatal Crash Near Queenstown

A woman has been prosecuted following a deadly collision in Queenstown.

After a deadly incident near Queenstown on Monday, a 26-year-old woman was charged with aggravated reckless driving causing death.

Amon James Saunders, 39, was killed in a car accident on State Highway 6 between Cromwell and Queenstown.

He was the lone occupant of his Hilux pickup when it collided with another vehicle traveling in the other way near the Nevis Bluff at 10.30 a.m. on Monday.

Saunders’ truck veered off the road and crashed on its roof some 100 meters away. The ute was half-submerged in the rapids of the Kawarau River.

It was transporting dangerous chemicals, and Fire and Emergency New Zealand personnel and some members of the public who had been in the water were decontaminated, according to Senior Sergeant Glenn Wilkinson.

According to an Authorities report issued on Thursday, the woman driving the second car was charged with aggravated reckless driving resulting in death.

On January 10, she was scheduled to appear in Queenstown District Court.

Saunders has four children and co-owned Central Wilding Tree Control Ltd with his wife, Holly.

His relatives said, “He was never happier than when he was fishing, farming, or spending time with his loved ones.”
