Overnight Shootings Spurs More Conversation on Improving North Tulsa Crime

TULSA, Okla. (CSU) — There have been two deadly shootings in Tulsa. This is a reason why some people do not want to stay outside late at night.

She said, “It’s scary.” It is very scary.

Taylor sees more police than in the past, but she still relies on her neighbors to help. “I watch out for my friends where I live,” Taylor said. “On my block, we police each other.”

The Tulsa Police Chief says this is important.

Community policing is when police work with their community. Or, he prefers to do collaborative policing. Franklin said that it would take our police department and our community to work together.

Taylor doesn’t like how many of the police officers she knows are not getting to know her community. She thinks some people are too afraid. Taylor said, “Talk to us. Don’t just take pictures and then leave.”

Chief Franklin says that there are challenges to the department. One is that it is made up of newer officers. There are also problems with officers moving around to different neighborhoods every year due to a process called bid boards.

If you do not have a police officer who works in the same area every day, they cannot be friends with that community.
