DeBary Leaders Address The Rise in Children Committing The Crime

DEBARY, Fla. – DeBary officials want to stop any crimes committed by kids. They will look for them and stop them.

“Mayor Karen Chasez says that we need productive people to live in DeBary, so we need to understand the forces affecting young people. We have a small group of people who are not being productive.”

Last month, a 14-year-old was arrested because he had shot someone during an alleged drug deal.

On Tuesday night, the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office and the school district addressed city leaders about a range of issues. They talked about drug use among kids, social media, and youth programs.

The sheriff wants to open a facility for kids. This is where they go if they have problems.

Sheriff Mike Chitwood says, “We need to figure out how this child got this problem and help the family find resources.” The mayor called Wednesday’s meeting a fact-finding mission.

We want to think about it and see if there is anything else we can do before our problem gets bigger. We have been doing this before we have a big problem.
