Man Arrested in Deadly West Indianapolis Hit-And-Run

INDIANAPOLIS — Homicide detectives detained a 55-year-old man on the west side of Indianapolis in connection with the fatal hit-and-run of another man.

James Gary, 55, was arrested on Tuesday after being identified as a suspect in the murder of John Coleman, 57.

On the morning of Monday, Jan. 3, Coleman was struck by a car.

Before 9 a.m., police were dispatched to a hit-and-run in the 1000 block of Centennial Street, near 10th Street and North Tibbs Avenue.

Coleman was found unresponsive in the front yard of a nearby home when they arrived. Coleman was sent to the hospital, where he died soon after.

Homicide detectives were dispatched to the area to look into the incident.

A white bumper was discovered at the crash site by detectives. Following their study, they came to the conclusion that the two guys may have known each other. The driver is also accused of purposely striking Coleman, according to police.

Detectives continued their investigation in the days that followed, eventually identifying Gary as the accused culprit.

On Tuesday, he was arrested in connection with Coleman’s death.
