Fresno Man Reports Burglary, Fires a Shot at Responding Police Officers

After firing a shot at detectives responding to the complaint of a burglary in progress in his south-central Fresno home early Sunday morning, the father had to be persuaded out of the flat with his children.

The guy contacted 911 just before 5 a.m. Sunday to report that someone was breaking into his apartment in the 200 block of South Callisch Avenue, between Highway 41 and First Street, south of Tulare Avenue.

According to Fresno Police Lt. Paul Cervantes, when police arrived, they tried to communicate with the man, who said that he didn’t believe they were cops while inside. As the officers sought to convince him of their identity, the man discharged one round through the apartment’s barred security screen door.

Officers took up several positions after beating a quick retreat from the door, eventually convincing the guy to come out of the house with his six children. The event did not result in any injuries to the guy, the children, or the cops. On Sunday, it was unclear if the individual was inebriated or really worried about the police’ authentic identities.

The individual was held for a while, but as of Sunday morning, no arrest had been made. “Our theory is that (the victim) believed someone was breaking into his house and mistaken the cops for someone who was coming to finish the job,” Cervantes added.
