The amount of financial support available to victims of crime in New York is growing.
Financial assistance for victims and survivors of crime whose property was damaged, stolen, or destroyed will be able to receive up to $2,500 to replace items deemed to be essential for their health, safety, or welfare. The new reimbursement eliminates a limit of $500 on the amount that can be paid for lost or stolen items.
Crime and public safety have emerged as continuing and major concerns in the 2018 general election campaign, and the office of Governor Kathy Hochul has announced the expanded reimbursement in response to these developments.
The governor made reference to the fact that the previous limit had not kept up with the rate of inflation.
“The cost of replacing items lost or damaged during a crime can create an unnecessary burden for victims and their families who are still recovering from a traumatic incident,” Hochul said. “The cost of replacing items lost or damaged during a crime can range anywhere from a few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars.” “In New York, we support victims in every manner imaginable, and I’m glad to expand this aid so that we can take one thing off of the victims’ and survivors’ plates and guarantee that they receive the support necessary to assist them in recovering.”
The Office of Victim Services is responsible for the administration of financial support for survivors and victims of crime. The goal of this organisation is to offer a safety net for persons whose lives have been interrupted as a result of such an occurrence.
According to Elizabeth Cronin, Director of Victims Services, “Victims of crime often have their whole lives upended in a matter of minutes, and the ramifications of their experience can linger for much longer.” “These individuals will be able to concentrate on their recovery and will experience a certain degree of relief as a result of the augmentation of these monies and the replacement of any essential goods that were lost. Any claim that is submitted on or after October 6 will be subject to the new cap. On October 12th, the newly enacted regulations became effective.
Claimable items include things like clothing, jewellery, mobile devices or laptops, as well as personal transportation or safety gear like a child’s car seat or a motorcycle helmet.
In addition, the Office of Victim Services will compensate qualifying individuals for the costs of counselling and medical care, as well as the costs associated with funerals and burials.
