WASHINGTON – Over the past two days, seven teens have been shot and injured across the city of Washington, District of Columbia.
The police have stated that they believe these are two different events, and they have not made any arrests.
On Monday, about 11:15 a.m., police were called to the area of Warder Street and Otis Place Northwest, where they received reports that two minors had been shot.
Shortly after that, there was yet another exchange of gunfire.
D.C. Commander James Boteler stated that approximately 20 minutes later, at 11:40, his officers heard rapid gunfire coming from right behind him in the 1300 block of Columbia Road. “My officers here at 14th and Columbia heard rapid gunfire coming from right behind me in the 1300 block of Columbia Road,” Boteler said.
Boteler stated that in that incident that took place in NW, a young boy was shot in the leg, and later on, they discovered a man who had been wounded in the stomach. Officers also found a gun inside a BMW that had been stolen in a previous carjacking. According to the preliminary assessment of the police, the gun appears to be an assault weapon.
The shootings on Monday came a day after three separate occurrences on Sunday afternoon resulted in the shooting deaths of four teenagers.
A lady who would only identify herself as “Wendy” told police that she heard bullets fired in the parking lot of the apartment building she lives in, which is located in the 2600 block of Birney Place Southeast. One of the shots hit a teenager, who was taken to the hospital for treatment. She claims that she ducked for shelter at that moment.
“I had serious concerns for my own safety. When the gunshots finally stopped, I looked outside and saw that my truck had been damaged by the bullets “Wendy recalled.
She posted photographs of her pickup, in which a single bullet can be seen ricocheting through the vehicle, striking the side mirrors, shattering a window, and striking the radio.
The police chief in Washington, DC, responded to the recent wave of violence by saying, “Enough is enough.”
A spray of bullets was fired into the flat that she shares with her teenage son less than three months prior to the current gunshots that were heard there. In July, that shooting took place in the same general vicinity on Birney Place, and it resulted in the injury of a pregnant woman. At the time, police estimated that there had been close to one hundred bullets fired.
“It’s stressful because when I leave my house early in the morning, I have to glance out the window to make sure that it’s safe for me to get in my car and drive to work. If I don’t feel like it’s safe, then I can’t leave my house. Bills still have to get paid, “Wendy added.
She reports that she is currently determining how she will be able to pay those fees as well as the unexpected deductible for her auto insurance.
