Get Ready for Van der Valk Season 2

Van der Valk, a gritty crime drama, is back on MASTERPIECE for Season 2. Dutch detective Piet Van der Valk (Marc Warren) and his police team are immersed in the conflicting worlds of modern Amsterdam as they deal with high-profile cases and grisly killings. Watch the first of three brand-new episodes on Sunday, September 25, 2022 at 9/8c to catch up on Van der Valk Season 1 and learn what to anticipate in Season 2.

Where Season One of Van der Valk Left Off

We first encountered a lead character in Season 1 who wasn’t exactly hiding their emotional baggage. In the season finale, flashbacks revealed his traumatic past: Van der Valk’s vehicle was rammed and overturned during a high-speed chase after a dishonest police officer. While Piet’s wife Arlette was flung from the car and died, his employer Chief Julia Dahlman was severely hurt inside. He will never move past her.

What to Expect from Season 2 of Van der Valk

A fast-paced police procedural that examines Amsterdam’s cultural differences, from squatting artists to compulsive serial killers and from the exuberant world of classical music to the sinister heart of sex trafficking, Season 2 is a treat for viewers. The series, which was shot on location, features all the sights, sounds, canals, and coffee shops of this magnificent city. Rest assured that our lead detective is still abrasive and thinks like a forensic psychologist despite dressing like a skateboarder. Piet Van der Valk still avoids commitment in his personal life, although he seems to be improving his social abilities. Dare we speculate that at work, he might even be coaching the young teammate who saved his life in Season 1?

The Season 2 Cast and Characters

Marc Warren was the only actor who could play Van der Valk without apologising (Beecham House, The Good Wife). According to Warren, the character is still “quite closed, a little impenetrable.” In light of this, “his opening scene sees him unexpectedly receiving a little love. He is being pursued by a few women before being saved by another one! (Hmmm.) The members of Van der Valk’s team are a diverse group who each bring a unique set of skills to the table, functioning somewhat like a dysfunctional family. Piet’s sharp right hand is Inspector Lucienne Hassell, played by Maimie McCoy as Dorothy in All Creatures Great and Small. The younger members of the crew are played by actors Luke Allen-Gale (who has been in Endeavour and Wallander) and Elliot Barnes-Worrell (Ready Player One), respectively. They are Sergeant Brad de Vries and Lieutenant Job Cloovers. Beer is kept in the morgue by Hendrik Davie, a pathologist who is played by Darrell d’Silva from Wrath of Man. The kind Chief Julia Dahlman (Emma Fielding from Les Misérables, Unforgotten) is in charge of them all.
