A ‘Squid Game’ Season 2 Update From Its Creator

Season 2 of Squid Game is still a ways off, and we’ll probably see Netflix’s reality programme adaptation first. Showrunner Hwang Dong-hyuk claims in a recent interview with THR that Netflix’s team has requested him for his set designs so they can make the non-lethal competition as faithful to the series as they possibly can. He dismisses the irony of Netflix producing a version of the Squid Game where contestants actually win money when the original clearly had an anti-capitalist message by saying:

“I started the show with the intention of spreading this message, but I also wanted to succeed and gain money at the same time. We live in a capitalist culture, thus I believe that the business that surrounds Squid Game is only reasonable. This show has received a lot of funding with the intention of making money from it. Therefore, I think that these firms being in a competitive and capitalistic environment is absolutely natural.

Sincerity be told, I greatly admire that. However, it is not why we are here. We’re interested in learning more about Squid Game season 2, and we already know a little bit about when and what will happen.

According to Hwang Dong-hyuk, he must complete scripting Squid Game season 2 by the end of the current year or the start of the following one. I’m not sure if this is a deadline I’ve set for myself or if Netflix is requiring it as part of their renewal agreement. In any case, it supports the notion that, as he has already stated, Squid Game season 2 would likely debut in late 2023 or early 2024. My preference is for later.

“I’ve seen a lot of responses to the show from viewers, but I don’t want to make a second season in response to those responses. All of the ideas I presented in season one automatically carry over to season two. Instead of attempting to live up to viewers’ expectations, I simply considered the last second when Gi-hun turned away from boarding the plane and wondered what he would do next. Events will flow organically in a direction that takes them all the way to the season’s conclusion. You already know that Seong Gi-hun had undergone a complete transformation at the end of season one, therefore season two will focus on what the new Gi-hun will do and how events will play out with this new type of character.

Many people disapproved of Gi-hun for leaving his kid behind and boarding a plane to pursue retribution on the creators of Squid Game, but that move will undoubtedly make for a more compelling season 2. What kind of influence can he now exercise with all that money, though I doubt he’ll be a player?
