LOS ANGELES, CA As a result of funding being authorised by the Los Angeles City Council on Wednesday to address a recent rise in crime in the area, Hollywood will soon have more police officers on the streets.
The motion’s sponsor, Councilman Mitch O’Farrell, requested $216,000 from the council to fund the installation of extra officer shifts at the Hollywood Division of the Los Angeles Police Department. Hollywood is represented by O’Farrell.
According to the councilman’s office, there has been a 75% increase in killings so far this year compared to last year, as well as a 35.6% increase in firearms fired, while robberies have increased by 19.4% and theft has increased by 24.7%.
O’Farrell declared last week that those who intend to commit crimes while in Hollywood are not welcome. “Wherever people live and work, Angelenos should feel protected.”
The motion claims that the demand for public safety has outpaced Hollywood’s capacity.
The motion states that increased resources being concentrated in Hollywood would help ensure public safety, especially for the most vulnerable members of society because it is as varied as, if not more so than, any other region of the city.
People “need to feel protected while they’re in Hollywood,” according to Blake Chow, deputy chief of the Los Angeles Police Department, in a statement from last week.
In order to prevent, discourage, and address crime, Chow stated, “We’re grateful to Council Member O’Farrell for these additional resources and look forward to using them as soon as possible.”
