According to Timeslive, 200 troops from the South African army have been placed on alert in case they are required to assist in addressing the rising instances of unrest and violence associated with crime.

According to a news website located in Johannesburg, Major-General Patrick Dube, the general officer in charge of the army’s infantry formation, issued the order on August 6 following a military command council meeting last week where generals were advised to be on high alert. It stated that any deployment would be done in concert with the South African Police Service.

Every South African province maintains one company of soldiers on call for potential deployment in an emergency, according to Timeslive. A second business is required to be prepared, per the order.
