The Revenge’s crew has re-boarded the ship. HBO Max has announced the renewal of the comedy series “Our Flag Means Death” for Season 2. The announcement comes nearly three months after the first season of the show concluded in March.
Rhys Darby and Taika Waititi star as real-life pirates Stede Bonnet and Ed Teach, also known as Blackbeard, in David Jenkins’ “Our Flag Means Death.” Bonnet, an English aristocrat, abandons his family in an attempt to make a living as a pirate, but his mild-mannered and gentlemanly nature proves unsuitable for a life of crime. During Season 1, he partners up with Ed and they fall in love unexpectedly, only for the season to conclude with the two separated and a sad Ed adopting his evil Blackbeard identity.
Critics mainly praised the first season of “Our Flag Means Death.” “The most interesting thing about ‘Our Flag Means Death,’ if also what may disappoint fans hoping for something more patently ridiculous, becomes how it ends up more gently introspective than outright funny in its search for comic treasure,” Variety chief TV critic Caroline Framke wrote in her review. The show gained a devoted fanbase during its first season and has been acclaimed for its LGBTQ representation, with three queer relationships in the main characters depicted in the storyline.
Along with Darby and Waititi, the Revenge’s team includes Ewen Bremner, Joel Fry, Samson Kayo, Con O’Neill, Nathan Foad, Vico Ortiz, Kristian Nairn, Matthew Maher, Guz Khan, David Fane, Nat Faxon, and Samba Schutte. Season 1 guest stars featured Leslie Jones, Fred Armisen, Kristen Schaal, Nick Kroll, Tim Heidecker, and Will Arnett, who played Stede’s childhood rival Nigel Badminton. With Garrett Basch and Dan Halsted, Jenkins and Waititi co-executive produce the show.
