BALTIMORE (CSU) – Even if a homicide occurs near the city’s famed tourism hub, Baltimore’s embattled young mayor said Monday that he “doesn’t have the luxury of caring.”

When a shooting erupted at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the city’s busy Inner Harbor amphitheater, a 17-year-old boy was murdered, and a teen female was injured, according to police.

According to Baltimore Police Commissioner Michael Harrison, despite the presence of at least 20 officers in the neighborhood as part of the Baltimore Police Department’s effort to reduce crime over Memorial Day weekend, no arrests were made.

According to Harrison, officers on foot were the first to respond to the incident. The homicide was one of four that took place in the city throughout the first two days of the holiday weekend.

Mayor Brandon Scott, 38, responded to the Inner Harbor murder on Monday by pointing out that crime is affecting a large section of the city, including the early Sunday slaying of a lady on the city’s south side.

Scott explained, “I don’t have the luxury of caring just because it happened in the Inner Harbor.” “At the Inner Harbor, that young man was killed. In South Baltimore, a young woman was killed. They are on par with me.”

With summer in full swing and gas rates at an all-time high, many residents of the Washington, D.C., area turn to Baltimore for a colorful, budget-friendly day excursion. However, the city is experiencing a crime epidemic that has become a major issue in the forthcoming governor election in Maryland.

If elected, Rushern Baker, the former Prince George’s County Executive, has promised to declare a state of emergency and relocate the Governor’s office to Baltimore. Last Monday, current Governor Larry Hogan addressed a scathing letter to Mayor Scott, requesting a written strategy for combating crime with state funds.

So far, in 2022, 137 individuals have died in the city as a result of homicide. The death toll rose to 338 in 2021. Only 197 people were slain a decade ago, in 2011.

The number of murders increased dramatically in 2015, the year that rioters went to the streets in response to the death of Freddie Gray while in police custody. Six officers were charged. However, none of them were found guilty.

Mayor Scott spoke to crime as a national issue, noting that shootings in high-profile tourist sites are not unique to the city.

Baltimore has the nation’s second-highest per-capita homicide rate. D.C., on the other hand, is ranked 13th, with a murder rate per capita that is less than half that of Baltimore.

After a school massacre in Parkland, Florida, four years ago, hundreds of thousands of people across the country joined the March for Our Lives.
