During a pursuit in Boulder, two deputies from the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office and one police from the University of Colorado Boulder shot their firearms at a suspect who brandished a pistol.
Trenton Joshua Dunham, 25, was arrested Thursday on suspicion of 16 counts, including attempted murder and assault, following a multijurisdictional crime spree that culminated with officers from the Boulder Police Department, CU Boulder Police Department, and Boulder County Sheriff’s Office chasing Dunham down the Table Mesa on-ramp of U.S. 36 in a stolen truck.
According to an affidavit, Dunham aimed a pistol at cops while driving, prompting two sheriff’s deputies and a CU Boulder police officer to fire at the car. Dunham was not struck, and officers employed vehicle manoeuvres to bring his car to a halt.
The event was investigated by a multijurisdictional shoot team. The two officers were placed on non-enforcement responsibilities, while the CU Boulder officer was placed on paid administrative leave, according to Boulder County Sheriff’s Office regulations.
The shoot team will give evidence to the Boulder County District Attorney’s Office, which will decide whether the officers’ actions were lawful or whether charges should be filed.
Dunham allegedly started the rampage by shooting at his father’s home in Greeley and then stealing his vehicle, according to the complaint. He then wrecked that automobile and stole a pickup in Broomfield at gunpoint on Thursday morning.
Dunham was then spotted driving the stolen vehicle through the Pearl Street pedestrian walkway, colliding with property around 15th and Pearl streets. Broomfield police were able to link the instances because to the description of the truck, which was a work vehicle with a corporate insignia on the side.
Just before 7 a.m., the car was seen again. Stop sticks were used by officers who witnessed it to immobilise the car. The truck continued to drive on its rims despite the sticks deflating the tyres, according to the announcement.
The driver then proceeded down Table Mesa Drive toward the eastbound US 36 entry ramp, then down the sidewalk toward the RTD bus stop, where passengers fled the vehicle’s route.
Dunham acknowledged to firing at his father’s house, the Broomfield carjacking, and waving a pistol at policemen while driving through Boulder in an interview with police following the collision.
Dunham was on the phone with his mother at the time, and she was the one who persuaded him not to discharge the pistol, according to the affidavit.
Dunham is charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder, two counts of aggravated motor vehicle theft, illegally discharging a firearm, three counts of felony menacing, second-degree assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated robbery, first-degree assault, vehicular eluding, and two misdemeanours.
