On Thursday, Dallas police detained a guy on suspicion of opening fire in Deep Ellum on a busy night in September, killing a teenager in a gunfight that left two people dead and four more wounded. Omari Cooper, 20, was arrested and charged with murder in Dallas County. His bond was set at $1 million. His lawyer could not be contacted for comment right away.
Cooper is suspected of murdering Kenneth Walker, 18, who was shot in the stomach at 12:40 a.m. on Sept. 19 near the junction of Malcolm X Boulevard and Main Street.
Darryus Rice, a 19-year-old juvenile, was murdered in the shooting, while four girls ranging in age from 15 to 30 were wounded. Rice was struck in the head and died in the hospital some hours later.
According to an incident report acquired by The Dallas Morning News, police believe Walker fired the shot that killed Rice.
Police in Deep Ellum shut off many streets and sent more cops in the days after the incident. Soon after the shooting, Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garca said that the agency would not tolerate violence in the neighbourhood and promised to “take Deep Ellum back” for residents and visitors.
Dezirae Palacios Haynes, Walker’s aunt, claimed a shooter approached her nephew and shot him, so he fired back in self-defense, and “many of others were injured.” As he collapsed, police say a pistol slid from Walker’s grip.
Lathaniel Pearson, 18, was also seen discharging a revolver that night and was arrested for aggravated assault with a dangerous weapon and resisting arrest. He allegedly dropped his revolver and attempted to flee from cops, but he was apprehended and detained shortly after.
Pearson remained in the Dallas County prison on Friday, facing allegations of dangerous behaviour with a handgun and escaping arrest.
