THE CITY OF YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO — A guy has pleaded guilty in the collision that killed a former Newark athlete and Youngstown State University football player.
According to court papers, Adrienne Washington Jr., 20, of Youngstown, pled guilty to one count each of involuntary manslaughter and refusal to obey a police officer’s direction or signal, both felonies.
Prosecutors in Mahoning County rejected Washington’s allegations of vehicular manslaughter and aggravated vehicular murder.
A Youngstown police officer noticed a serious traffic infraction and used his lights and sirens to initiate a traffic stop, according to the Newark Advocate. Washington allegedly ran a red light at a high rate of speed and collided with Shackleford’s car as it passed through the junction, according to police.
From 2015 to 2016, Shackleford was a member of the Youngstown State University football team. At Newark City Schools, he also participated in football, basketball, and baseball.
Washington faces a maximum sentence of 11 years in jail.
