Track Athlete Dies, Others Injured in Hit-And-Run Near Williamsburg

In a hit-and-run near Williamsburg, a track athlete died, and several were injured.

Following an automobile accident in York County on Thursday evening, a 20-year-old collegiate athlete died, and three teammates were injured.

Members of the Milligan University cross country and track and field teams were involved in the incident, which occurred shortly after 6 p.m., according to a news release from state police.

Five members of the university’s cross country/track and field team were jogging near the intersection of Williamsburg Pottery Road and Lightfoot Road when they were all struck by a red two-door automobile, according to police.

All five were transferred to Sentara Williamsburg Hospital. Eli Cramer, 20, died in the hospital from his injuries. According to authorities, another athlete, a 21-year-old guy, was seriously injured.

According to a statement from the institution in Johnson City, Tennessee, Cramer was a sophomore. Seniors Alex Mortimer and Eli Baldy were also injured, according to the announcement. According to the university, Mortimer was undergoing treatment. Baldy received treatment and was later freed.

“A top Christian liberal arts college,” according to the university’s website. According to the school, there were 1,347 pupils enrolled in 2020.

The Colonial Relays, a track event that draws teams from all across the East Coast, will be held in Williamsburg this weekend. Christopher Newport, VCU, Norfolk State, James Madison, Delaware, George Washington, Howard, and others were among the colleges that were expected to compete.

After hitting the runners, the vehicle fled along Williamsburg Pottery Road, according to officials. He was arrested and taken into prison after the vehicle crashed into the middle of Route 199.

Late Thursday night, the probe was still ongoing.
