Southland Man in Wheelchair as A Result of Head-On Crash He Caused

After pleading guilty to negligent or inconsiderate vehicle operation causing harm at Motu Rimu Rd, Invercargill, on July 8, 2021, Jarad Malcolm Bashford, 34, appeared in the Invercargill District Court on Thursday for sentencing.

According to the statement of facts, Bashford’s vehicle crossed the center line at a sharp bend and crashed head-on with an incoming vehicle at about 12.15 p.m.

The victim had a huge puncture wound on his left leg, a large haematoma on his right thigh, and fractures in his wrist, foot, and nose.

According to defense counsel John Fraser, the catastrophic occurrence was triggered by a “moment of inattention,” and Bashford was forced to use a wheelchair as a result.

Bashford stated in court that he expected to be in the chair for an extended period of time.

The victim worked with his hands, and earning a living had become more stressful as a result of the injuries, according to Judge John Brandts-Giesen, and the victim’s medical bills had approached the maximum of possible claims.

Judge Brandts-Giesen told Bashford, “This was pretty poor driving on your part.”

Before regaining his license, Bashford will have to complete a defensive driving course.

Bashford was sentenced to 12 months of supervision, 18 months of driving prohibition, and $2257.20 in emotional harm and reparation to the victim by Judge Brandts-Giesen.
