71-Year-Old Man Found Guilty of Attempted Murder of A Police Officer, Officials Say (1)

MARIPOSA, Calif. (CSU) – According to the Mariposa County District Attorney’s Office, a 71-year-old man was convicted guilty of attempted murder of a police officer.

On August 28, 2020, about 7:30 p.m., Mariposa County Sheriff’s Deputies arrived to a house to serve court documents, where they were received by Douglas Popke, according to the DA’s office. Popke allegedly grew enraged and grabbed an assault weapon at some time, according to authorities.

Popke opened fire on the deputy, according to the DA’s office. According to the DA’s Office, the deputy and Popke then exchanged fire, and the deputy was able to flee to safety.

According to the District Attorney’s office, Popke’s sentencing is set for June 23 this year, and he might face life in jail.
