FORT MYERS, FLORIDA (CSU) – On Monday, the two men arrested for a spree of armed robberies, burglaries, and leading Lee County Sheriff’s deputies on a high-speed chase will face formal charges.
Demetrius Beckworth, 20, and Willie Bell, 18, were arrested on February 16, 2022, in a Lehigh Acres area for reportedly committing many armed robberies and house invasions.
The chain of events that day was documented in a probable cause statement by the Lee County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO). According to LCSO documents, one of the victims said that he was watching TV in his garage when three black males wearing black masks broke in, pointed handguns at him, and demanded money.
Bell was recognized as the culprit who seized the victim’s wallet and phone while striking him with the bottom of his weapon, according to LCSO papers. Bell allegedly acknowledged robbing the victim, according to the documents.
Deputies received a report shortly after the break-in about an additional robbery that occurred at a construction site near the break-in.
Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno said last month that deputies found the vehicle linked to the construction site incident on Fred Avenue South, but the driver fled, leading to a high-speed chase. According to deputies, this resulted in the suspect colliding with two vehicles and nearly crashing into a school bus.
The driver was later identified as Beckworth. Beckworth admitted to being the getaway driver, according to the probable cause filings. He claimed he was aware of the presence of guns in the vehicle, which is why he eluded the deputies who attempted to stop him.
He was detained on the following counts while driving without a license: 1. Robbery with a handgun
2. Theft of a conveyance
3. Evade/elude the cops
4. Driving a vehicle without a valid driver’s license
5. Fleeing the scene of two collisions and hit-and-run.
Bell was arrested on the following charges: 1. Armed robbery
2. Theft of a conveyance
Two other individuals were also implicated, but they have yet to be apprehended. Bell and Beckworth are still being held in jail and are due in court on Monday at 8:30 a.m.
