Two Arrested in Connection to Death of Man whose Body was Found on Bangerter Highway

An investigation is underway into the death of a man discovered dead on Bangerter Highway last month.

Both Mario Alberto Carreto Morales, 24, and Raul Jaimes Cortez, 30, have been arrested and charged with aggravated robbery, criminal homicide by violence, and obstruction of justice.

In the early hours of February 26, police were called to Bangerter Highway around 7800 South after reports of a body in the road.

Cesar Adan Martinez of West Valley City, Utah, was the victim of a stabbing that occurred in a moving vehicle, according to the police.

Relatives tell KSL TV that Martinez served four combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army and that he recently relocated to the Salt Lake City area.

Following his death, Martinez’s vehicle was discovered in Salt Lake City, and the cause of death was determined to be murder.

Several tips from the public helped detectives zero in on the two suspects, according to West Jordan police.

In the course of their investigation, detectives discovered that Martinez had communicated with a suspect and that the suspects were “quite near in proximity to the crime.”

One of the suspects was hauled into jail on Tuesday and acknowledged being with Martinez and the other suspect on the night of the murder.

The suspect in jail allegedly informed police that the other suspect wanted to rob Martinez as they drove home.

During transporting Mr. Martinez home, an altercation arose between him and Suspect #1, who allegedly stabbed Mr. Martinez three times and shoved him down Bangerter Highway.

The suspect said he and another suspect abandoned Martinez’s vehicle in Salt Lake City, according to police.

After the first suspect was taken into custody, the second suspect was apprehended later. The defendant admitted to being with Martinez on the night of his death, but he denied stabbing Martinez and shoving him out of the vehicle.

A large number of leads came in through our detectives’ collaboration with the media and the general public, and they were able to identify two individuals immediately.” Detectives were able to bring Cesar Adan Martinez’s killers to justice thanks to countless hours of hard work and the help of our law enforcement partners, Officer Samuel Winkler of the West Jordan Police Department said. “The Martinez family has been able to get the closure they needed,” Winkler said.
