Police ID Michigan man killed in U.P. fire

Derrick Maddox, 42, of McMillan, was found dead in a burning building on March 9 and was identified as the victim.

Michigan State Troopers were summoned to a structure fire at 7177 County Road 415 in McMillan on March 9. The house had been destroyed beyond repair, and a body had been discovered within.

To this day, the cause of the blaze remains a mystery. Investigations into the incident are still ongoing. The Columbus Township Fire Department, Luce County Fire Department, and the Luce County Sheriff’s Department supported the troopers. This investigation also involves the MSP Canine Unit and the MSP Fire Investigator.

A week after firefighters discovered Maddox’s body inside the house, the cause of the fire is still being investigated.
