Sunnyside Man Charged with Vehicular Homicide in Fatal Dui Crash

In connection with a Monday incident that killed another Sunnyside man, a 26-year-old Sunnyside man is charged with vehicular homicide. In Yakima County Superior Court on Friday, prosecutors brought the charge against David Gomez-Perez.

Prosecutors claim Gomez-Perez was inebriated when he drove his Dodge Durango around 5:45 p.m. At the intersection of Washout and Van Belle roads, a Nissan Frontier crashed with Monday.

The collision killed Jose Calderon, the Nissan’s 44-year-old driver. Yakima County Coroner Jim Curtice said he died in the crash from blunt-force injuries.

According to court documents, Gomez-Perez ran a stop sign and struck Calderon’s vehicle, which was then thrown into a nearby canal.

In lieu of $100,000 bond, Gomez-Perez is being held in the Yakima County jail. Judge Richard Bartheld stated when setting bail that, while Gomez-Perez has no prior convictions, he also has no ties to the community.
