ORLANDO, FLORIDA – Following a series of violent episodes in downtown Orlando last year, community and business groups urged that the police respond. Orlando police increased the amount of cops in the downtown area as a result of the incident.

The agency set out to remove firearms off the streets, armed with licence plate scanners, cameras, and a staff of data analysts. The move, according to Orlando Police Chief Orlando Rolon, is yielding results.

“The outcome was favourable. “We’ve removed a considerable number of guns off the streets,” Rolon said. Along the last year, police in the Orange Avenue corridor have removed 158 weapons off the streets. According to the department, this has reduced crime, and officers have not responded to a shooting with a victim in the downtown area since November.

The next step, according to Rolon, is to see whether bars will let the OPD crime centre tap into security cameras so cops can observe what’s going on in real time if and when a crime occurs.
