Gwinnett County Crime Crackdown Leads to 65 Arrests

GA The Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office is cracking down on crime, from gangs to drugs to human trafficking, and recently did so in a major operation.

“It was boots on the ground, and our entire division was dedicated for eight straight days, almost 24 hours a day,” said Deputy Ashley Castiblanco, a Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson.

Operation One Star was a gang, drug, and human trafficking-related crime-fighting operation that aimed to dismantle and target specific offences. Over 95 deputies focused on high-crime areas in the county from the end of February to the beginning of March.

Parts of Lawrenceville, Sugar Hill, Norcross, Buford, Snellville, and Pleasant Hill are among those affected.

Drugs and illicit guns, according to Castiblanco, were taken off the streets as a result of the increased patrols. Investigators used crime mapping data, she added, to figure out which regions to focus on first.

“The local governments providing that intelligence for us, such as the Gwinnett County Police Department,” Castiblanco added, “was highly beneficial and important to our operation.”

During the eight days of Operation One Star, deputies met with 267 people suspected of crimes, 65 of whom were detained, according to Castiblanco. Many of them were found to be in possession of narcotics, illegal guns, and drug paraphernalia, according to officers.

155 arrest warrants and 189 citations were issued by deputies.

Officials say Operation One Star is just one example of how proactive policing is being used to help reduce crime. The overarching purpose is to make the county a safer place for the people who live there.
