6 Teens Arrested in Iowa School Shooting

Des Moines police reported that six juveniles, including a 14-year-old, had been taken into custody following a shooting outside a school that claimed the life of a 15-year-old boy and injured two other teenagers.

First-degree murder and two attempted murder charges have been filed against each of the three suspects from Des Moines in connection with the Monday afternoon shooting at East High School in Des Moines‘ downtown area.

Gunshots were heard outside the school from various automobiles, according to police. Those detained are between the ages of 14 and 17.

When the 15-year-old who was shot and killed was not a student at the school, police stated that he was the intended target of the shooting. Authorities said that a 16-year-old East student and an 18-year-old East student who attended the school were two victims.

Girl, 16, and boy, 18, remain hospitalized in critical but stable condition, according to police.

“Real change to gun regulations and access would go a long way in helping us,” said Superintendent Thomas Ahart, who noted that school shootings have “gotten all too prevalent.”

After the shooting, Des Moines Police Chief Dana Wingert visited the school to convey his displeasure with the acts of violence.
