Us and Britain Blame Russia for Cyberattacks on Ukraine's Websites

In January, hackers targeted Ukrainian government institutions and key banks, and the White House blamed them on Russia. “Technical information ties the Russian Main Intelligence Directorate or GRU,” says Deputy National Security Advisor Anne Neuberger of the Obama administration. GRU infrastructure, according to Neuberger, “was observed transferring huge amounts of traffic to Ukrainian-based IP addresses or domains.”

According to AP and Reuters, the United Kingdom has officially linked the incident to Russia’s military intelligence organization’s GRU. Neuberger claimed the assaults had “minimal impact” on the target Ukrainian websites since its officials immediately restored them.

A statement in Ukrainian, Russian, and Polish left by the assailants on Ukraine’s defense, and foreign ministries was translated as: “Greetings to the Ukrainian people! All of your private information has been made available to the general public. It is impossible to recover any of the computer’s data after it has been wiped clean.” The letter also referenced “historical land” and depicted Ukraine’s flag and map with crossed-out sections.

According to the Ukrainian Information Ministry, there were early signs that Russia was responsible for the assaults. It was also alleged that allusions to ultra-nationalist organizations in Ukraine were only an attempt by the Russians to cover their tracks.

“The international society must be prepared to cast a light on harmful cyber behavior and hold actors accountable for all such disruptive or harmful cyber activity,” Neuberger said of the White House’s public criticism of the Kremlin. Despite the strikes’ “minimal impact,” the White House is concerned that Russia might carry out more disruptive actions in the future, followed by an invasion of Ukraine. According to US Vice President Joe Biden, Russian President Vladimir Putin has already decided to attack Ukraine, which was announced on Friday.
