The True Cost of Crime in Shreveport

The True Cost of Crime in Shreveport

(CSU) – SHREVEPORT, La. – Every violent crime scene in Shreveport shows the physical and mental toll. However, there is another cost that each Shreveport person bears as a result of the crime.

“It’s hardly unexpected that we’re on the list.” “Obviously, it’s disheartening,” said Dr. David Hoaas, an economics professor at Centenary College.

Dr. Hoaas’ ranking is based on MoneyGeek research that used an FBI data methodology to assess the cost of crime in over 300 American communities.

Shreveport has the tenth highest cost per capita in the US, with each individual paying $5,153 per year in crime.

“What we can monitor are the spending dollars that show up in the cost of crime.” “Loss of property or medical costs due to violent crimes, or police force expenditures,” Dr. Hoaas said.

According to him, financial stress is hitting certain people more than others.

“There are those who pay no price for crime because it doesn’t happen to them,” he said. “This implies that some people are bearing a double and treble load.”

Crime has an opportunity cost as well.

“I’ve spoken with a number of folks, and they all say the same thing: they would never live off the [Barksdale Air Force] base here.” Even if they had the opportunity to get free rent or anything.” Konica McClure-McKoy, the wife of a Barksdale Airman, agreed.

Before going on base in 2020, she claims she spent numerous hours researching the location. She claims that several Air Force families told her about the high crime rate in Shreveport before of time.

“You’re going to listen to those things if everyone says don’t live in Shreveport, don’t walk down this street at night,” McClure-McKoy said. “Because there’s no other way for you to know these things.”

She was born into a military family and moved about a lot as a kid, living in several places around the United States and Germany.

She said that she had never felt less safe in her life. It’s one of the reasons she opted to live on base.

“It’s hard enough being worried about [her husband] when he’s gone,” she added. “However, I felt certain that I was secure.” So that’s one less issue for you to be concerned about.”

Many others, according to Dr. Hoaas, aren’t concerned since crime isn’t a problem in their area. Crime is deterred by gated communities and private protection. He believes this is a symptom of the larger issue, which leads to an out-of-sight, out-of-mind mindset.

“They don’t reside in a five-mile radius surrounding their house.” “They’re from the Shreveport-Bossier area,” he said. “Rather than merely thinking about themselves and their next-door neighbors, they should consider the effect of crime on those persons.”

The MoneyGeek analysis also takes into account house and vehicle insurance prices, which are among the highest in the nation owing to crime in Louisiana.

New Orleans and Baton Rouge, in addition to Shreveport, made the top ten list.
