An attempt at a telephone fraud has resulted in an arrest, according to the police. Tecumseh, Friday
TECUMSEH, TEXAS — Last week, a telephone scam attempt took an odd turn: instead of meeting their victim, the suspected culprits saw police officers and were detained.
According to a press release from the Tecumseh Police Department, officers were sent to a property in the city on Friday to investigate a possible fraud case in which the fraudster poses as a family member. The so-called family member in this scam requests a huge number of money in order to get out of legal difficulties.
“While this scam has been going around for a while,” the statement noted, “this situation was a bit unusual in that someone was going to come to the house to pick up the cash.”
Officers came and assisted the prospective victim in continuing the scam so that the suspects could be detained and questioned. Officers were already inside the house when the two suspects arrived. They were both brought into custody after a short foot chase and booked into the Lenawee County Jail on counts of fraud – larceny by conversion.
The identities of the accused were not revealed right away.
The Lenawee County Sheriff’s Office and personnel of the Region of Irish Hills Narcotics Office aided the Tecumseh Police Department.
According to the press release, neither the police nor the courts take money to “get rid” of criminal charges. The only time money is taken is for bond, and the supplier must deliver the bond money to the prison when the person is released.
According to the announcement, no government agency will ever ask for payment by gift card or solicit payment over the phone. Anyone with inquiries or suspicions of being a victim of fraud should contact their local police department.
