Madison County Sheriff’s Office Investigating School Threat Posted on Social Media

The Madison County Sheriff’s Office is looking into a social media threat against a school.

Chittenango, New York – Following a viral statement on social media Tuesday night, the Madison County Sheriff’s Office started an investigation into a school threat.

The threat was originally thought to be directed at Chittenango High School, but the sheriff’s office has subsequently issued an update clarifying that the threat is “not specifically targeting (the) Chittenango School District,” according to Samantha Field, a department spokesman.

“The threat is being taken seriously,” Field said, adding that the inquiry is still underway.

The sheriff’s office is cooperating with the Chittenango Police Department on the threat investigation and has contacted school districts around the county, according to Field.

“DO NOT GO TO SCHOOL TOMORROW JANUARY 26,” reads the threat, which was captured and uploaded on a Chittenango neighborhood Facebook group Tuesday night.

A “shooting tomorrow at CHS” was also mentioned in the threat.

The sheriff’s office did not reply to a request for information from Syracuse.com | The Post-Standard on what the “chs” in the post referred to.

Madison County Sheriff Todd Hood stated, “Unfortunately, threats like these are becoming increasingly regular.” “We will punish those who are culpable accountable for each of these threats.”
