Brockway man sentenced to state prison for assaults

For attacks, a Brockway man was sentenced to state jail.

For assault, sexual assault, and strangulation of a lady, Judge Paul Cherry sentenced William Robert Winkelman, 50, of Brockway and formerly of Cherry Tree, to a minimum of 12 years in state prison and a maximum of 24 years.

At a trial in November, a jury convicted Winkelman guilty of two charges of aggravated assault, sexual assault, strangling, terroristic threats, illegal restraint, and three counts of simple assault for occurrences in 2019 and 2020.

Winkelman was also ordered to fulfill all of Megan’s Law’s provisions, including having no contact with the victim or her family, in addition to his jail term.

Because this is a domestic violence offense, Winkelman is forbidden from owning or having any weapons, according to Cherry.

Joshua Maines of Clearfield, Winkelman’s attorney, said the verdict will be appealed and urged Winkelman not to speak at the hearing this week.

The victim testified throughout the trial that she and Winkelman had been dating for a long time and shared a home in Cherry Tree.

According to the victim, Winkelman was verbally abusive to her on several occasions. On March 11, 2020, she reported the abuse to the state police barracks at Punxsutawney.

The woman testified about three separate incidences of Winkelman physically attacking her throughout the trial. Sexual assault was reportedly involved in one of the incidents.

Leanne Nedza, First Assistant District Attorney, represented the Commonwealth during the hearing.
