The Tragic Irony of Trump’s Pitiful Response to Biden

The Tragic Irony of Trump's Pitiful Response to Biden (1)

President Joe Biden usually speaks little about his predecessor, referring to Donald Trump simply as “the other man,” but on the anniversary of the Jan. 6 attack, the Democrat made one exception. The current president delivered a comprehensive criticism of the Republican’s election-day lies, outlining to the public how Trump’s assault on reality has harmed our democracy.

It didn’t sit well with the vanquished former president.

While Trump has been banned from social media for lying in dangerous ways, he issued a series of press releases yesterday morning, the first of which claimed, among other things, that the United States is no longer energy independent, that its elections are corrupt, and that its international standing has deteriorated.

Soon after, he made another bogus assertion, claiming that the 2020 presidential election was “rigged.” In a follow-up remark, he repeated the ludicrous assertion. Finally, Trump accused Democrats of attempting to “sabotage the peaceful transition of power,” claimed additional proof of Georgia selling ballots for $10, and maintained his misguided idea that the election was the “true insurgency.”

For the sake of the trees, let us not lose sight of the forest: To Americans, according to Biden, “The former president of the United States of America has created and disseminated a web of disinformation regarding the 2020 election. He’s done it because he values power above principle, his own interests over those of his country and America, and his shattered ego over our democracy and Constitution.”

And, when he made these remarks, Trump retaliated against allegations of lying by lying even more. “Biden is plainly correct,” the Republican could have simply remarked in a statement.

One of Trump’s numerous missives added to the awful irony:

Today, Biden exploited my name* to try to further polarize America… The Democrats want to seize control of Jan. 6 in order to raise concerns and split the country.

The then-president exhorted his followers to “fight much harder” against “evil people” and “display strength” at the Capitol a year ago yesterday. “Without strength, you’ll never be able to reclaim our nation,” he concluded. “You must demonstrate your strength.” Soon after, a terrible insurgent riot erupted.
