Woman Accused of Shooting Boyfriend Told Police They 'Played' With Shotgun, He Pointed it at 1-year-old

(CSU) LAS VEGAS – Detectives in Las Vegas are attempting to put together what occurred just before a woman fatally shot her lover with a shotgun over the weekend.

Officers arriving at the residence in the 900 block of Twain Avenue on Saturday were told that Jahmal Rogers died in an accident.

Rogers’ girlfriend, the 37-year-old Shanika Smith, is charged with his murder. Smith offered officers multiple versions of the events that led up to the shooting, according to an arrest record obtained by 13 Action News.

Smith and Rogers were said to have fought all day before the shooting, according to police. Smith said Rogers “battered” her teenage son and pointed a firearm at his head earlier in the day. After an argument with their neighbors, Rogers fetched the shotgun and began “playing” with their 1-year-old kid, “pointing the shotgun and chasing him with it.”

According to the investigation, Smith and Rogers “played” with the pistol by pointing it towards each other and pulling it away from each other. Smith said that she didn’t think the rifle was loaded.

According to Smith, Rogers was shot when the rifle was leveled at him, he seized it, and it “accidentally fired.”

According to the article, when police questioned her about the nature of the alleged game between her and Rogers, she gave a different version of events. Smith said she unintentionally shot Rogers while pointing the gun at him while he was on the phone with his ex-girlfriend.

Rogers was shot following an altercation, according to a statement released by the Las Vegas police department on Tuesday.

Smith was charged with first-degree murder and endangering the welfare of a child.
