Sussex Police Receive Additional £18.5 Million in Funding

Next year, Sussex police will receive a cash boost of up to £18.5 million.

The rise comes as police forces throughout the UK will receive a 7% funding increase in 2022-23, increasing the total sum to £16.9 billion.

Home Secretary Priti Patel’s announcement was warmly received by MP Henry Smith.

“I know how essential extra money is in aiding our police to clamp down on crime because I work with our local police department,” the Conservative Crawley MP added.

“This will make a difference in Crawley, bringing overall funding for our local police force to £346.2 million for 2022-23, assisting our police officers and Police and Crime Commissioners in their efforts to keep our streets safer.”

“This cash will help our cops expand on the great job they’ve done so far, including removing deadly weapons from our streets and putting a stop to the drug epidemic in our neighborhoods.”

The boost will aid in the implementation of the government’s Beating Violence Plan, which focuses on reducing homicide rates and eradicating neighborhood crime.

In addition, Police and Crime Commissioners will get an extra £796 million to use as they see fit, with counter-terrorism policing surpassing £1 billion for the first time.

According to Mr. Smith, recent statistics demonstrate that the Beating Crime Plan has already had a substantial impact on removing dangerous criminals from the streets.

Since the beginning of 2019, more than 1,500 county drug lines have been stopped, resulting in almost 7,400 arrests and £4.3 million in drug seizures.

Nearly 16,000 knives and other hazardous weapons were also confiscated, and 300,000 at-risk young people were helped through Violence Reduction Units.

The money will also go toward the establishment of a National Crime Laboratory, which will promote the use of cutting-edge data science in crime prevention, as well as improving 999 response times, investing in law enforcement intelligence, and modernizing vital IT infrastructure.

“Crimes including theft, burglary, and knife crime are down; we’ve added 11,053 police officers to our streets, and we’ve stopped down 1,500 narcotics lines that prey on the young and vulnerable,” said the Home Secretary.

“However, we must go farther and quicker to make our communities even safer, so today, in accordance with our Beating Crime Plan, I am increasing money for our fantastic police forces and law enforcement agencies to achieve precisely that.”

“Crime reduction is a primary objective for my administration, and I will continue to engage with law enforcement leaders to ensure that this extraordinary investment results in fewer crimes and victims.”
