White House Official Allegedly Said National Guard Troops Would Protect Trump Supporters Jan. 6

This report out Sunday says that Chief of Staff Mark Meadows said National Guard troops would make sure the president’s supporters are safe.

An email by Meadows was one of the urgent questions for Meadows from a House committee investigation. The email was about if supporters of President Donald Trump would be safe the next day.

The person who got the email was not shown in the report.

Mr. Meadows sent an email to someone about the events on January 6 and said that the National Guard would be present to ‘protect pro-Trump people.’ Many more would be available on standby.

A lawyer from Meadows did not respond to a request for comment.

The claim is different than the government’s response to the January 6 violence, which was predicted. The Capitol police were overwhelmed, and it took a long time for the National Guard to respond.

The report was released to support a resolution that holds Meadows in contempt. A simple majority of the House could make a citation against Meadows and send it to the Justice Department.

Steve Bannon, a former top advisor to President Donald Trump, has been accused of two things. He refused to meet with the committee and answer their questions. The other thing is that he refused to give them the documents they asked for.

Bannon pleaded not guilty to both charges.

Both the law and Bannon have said they are not required to give information because they have privileges. Bannon is an old friend of Trump’s.

The Select Committee said they are confident that no executive privilege claim can stop them from asking for this.

The person who writes the report said that Meadows has not shown up for two scheduled depositions before committee investigators. They have given documents, but they might have lost other documents too.

It appears that Mr. Meadows may not have retained or archived documents, which is against the law.

The Select Committee is looking into the January 6 attack. They are trying to find out if high-level politicians were behind the violence when Trump supporters stormed the hallowed chambers as they tried to stop congressional certification of President Joe Biden’s 2020 election victory.

The panel said that Meadows had knowledge of Trump’s activities on January 6, and they also seemed to have communications with people who were organizing a January 6 rally near the Capitol.

Mr. Meadows spoke with people who planned the January 6 rally. According to the report, one of them expressed safety concerns to Mr. Meadows about the event.

Meadows received a text from a person organizing the Washington, D.C. Ellipse Rally. The rally had been going on for a while, and people were going somewhere else. They sent Meadows a text to help them find their way there.

The report says that Meadows may know important information about President Trump’s request to Georgia’s secretary of state. The committee thinks she knows how many votes he needs to overturn his loss.
