Biden Declares Major Disaster in Kentucky After Deadly Tornadoes

The president of the United States, Joe Biden, declared a major federal disaster in Kentucky after a swarm of deadly tornadoes hit the state on Friday. This makes more money available to help people fix their houses and get back to normal.

If the government declares a disaster, they will give money to people in certain counties. They will give money to people in these counties: Caldwell, Fulton, Graves, Hopkins, Marshall, Muhlenberg, and Taylor.

The aid will have many different programs. One of them is a loan for people who have lost property and need to pay back the money for it.

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear formally requested the declaration on Sunday after the twisters destroyed a town called Mayfield. The tornado also hit a candle factory.

The White House said that Joe Biden approved the request. This is because he approves all requests on Sundays.

The tornadoes that have been seen in the past week have been the most destructive in the state’s history. These tornadoes flattened strong buildings made of steel and brick, but not all. One tornado was so strong it crossed 227 miles (365 km) of land. Almost all of this land was in Kentucky. The governor said this tornado did a lot of damage to the state where it went through, but there are still strong buildings standing.

The Democratic president had previously said that the storms were a federal emergency. This allowed FEMA to help people after facing shortages in housing, food, water, and power.

But under an emergency declaration, assistance is limited to $5 million. See the FEMA website for more information.

A major disaster declaration provides a wide range of federal programs for people and public buildings. These can include both emergency and permanent work.
