Knight on ABC hit show Grey’s Anatomy passed away during an after-hours surgery to remove a collapsed lung at Seattle Grace Hospital near his heart that had been damaged from previous car accident injuries.
This wasn’t just any random operation as many others were scheduled for this night; only two other doctors, including Derek Shepherd, who performed the procedure, knew about what was really going on and what O’Malley’s true intentions were. Derek tried his best to save George but knew the damage was too severe for even him to repair it.

– The episode aired April 28th, 2009, during season five of Grey’s Anatomy titled “How To Save A Life,” where George dies after failing a surgery that Dr. Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) begged him not to take part in because he knew there wasn’t enough time left before death would occur due to internal bleeding from an injury sustained years ago when he got into a car accident with his mother as she ran out onto the road while talking on her cell phone and crashed right into young George who had less than one percent chance for survival at birth, so they didn’t have a lot of time to get him prepped and ready for what was going on.
– The episode starts off with Dr. Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) being paged from the ER where her patient is in labor, but she doesn’t want to go because Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh), who happens to be her best friend, had just told her that despite what everyone thinks about George he’s actually been acting weird lately and hasn’t been himself at all so maybe something isn’t right here after all even though thing between them haven’t changed since they ended their love affair months ago due to his fear of heights which led up to plummeting down an elevator shaft while trying to save someone during a blackout caused by what they thought was a gas explosion but what turned out to be an electrical fire.
– While on the phone with Meredith, Cristina is called by Dr. Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd), who tells her about what happened during George’s operation and makes sure she knows what’s going on so he can trust her enough not to call anyone else in their group of friends which only includes Alex Karev (Justin Chambers), Izzie Stevens (Katherine Heigl), Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson), Richard Webber aka Dr. Shepherd himself played by actor James Pickens Jr., Arizona Robbins(Jessica Capshaw) & Callie Torres or better known as herself, Sara Ramirez for this character that originated from Grey’s Anatomy spinoff called Private Practice which aired during the fall season of 2007.
