Man Found Dead in Car Submerged in Pond Near Polk City (1)

POLK COUNTY, Fla. —Investigators are looking into what caused a crash that ended with a man dying. The car went into a pond in Polk County, and the man was inside.

Deputies said that family members of Jose Mercado contacted them on Thursday morning to report him missing. He left last night at 1 a.m., but they don’t know where he is now.

The report says that one of Mercado’s relatives found his phone. The phone said that it was near Moore Road and Deen Still Road near Polk City.

After going to the intersection, the family found evidence of a possible crash.

A drone flew over the area and found a car in the pond. The sheriff’s office brought their team of people who swim underwater to get cars out of water.

A man in a 2013 Dodge Durango was found dead when deputies went to the pond. He was driving north on Moore Road but did not stop at the Deen Still Road intersection.

The sheriff’s office said that Mercado’s car went over an embankment. The car began to topple end-over-end and then landed in a pond. It is not known if he had his seatbelt on.

The crash is still being investigated.
