Municipal Unemployment Continues to Drop

People are looking to hire workers in the Albany region. They are advertising more. Starting wages have gone up, and sign-on bonuses may be offered too. In September, the unemployment rate in the Hudson Valley was 4.3%. This is the lowest it has been since the pandemic hit. More and more municipalities had an unemployment rate of less than 4% in September.

In the City of Mount Vernon, 7.2% of people don’t have a job. That is the highest rate. In Poughkeepsie, it is 6.3%. And in Newburgh, it’s 6.2%. But on the lowest end of the spectrum, Port Chester had a rate of 3.3%. Rye also had a rate of 3.3%.

The unemployment rates in the Empire State are continuing to drop. The current average is 5.3%. This is down from 6.7% last year. The Bureau of Labor Statistics released the numbers in November. Reports for this organization are usually published monthly.

At least ten municipalities had an unemployment rate of less than 4%. Some have the highest unemployment rates in the state. These include Mount Vernon at 7.2%, Poughkeepsie at 6.3%, and Newburgh at 6.2%. But on the other end, several municipalities had lower rates, including Port Chester at 3.3% and Rye with a rate of 3.3%.

The statistics were broken out by counties and municipalities too. This is because the unemployment rate isn’t given for each county or municipality. It’s also possible that it won’t get released every month at all. For example, the report regarding August’s numbers was not published until September.

At least 16 counties had an unemployment rate of less than 4%. These include Columbia County (3.7%), Tioga County (3.7%), and Orleans County (3.4%).

But some have higher numbers, including 6 in the Capital Region with rates between 6% and 6.9%. Those are Cortland (6.9%), Lewis (6.8%), Tompkins (6.5%), and Broome (6.4%) counties, as well as Oneida County at 6% and Herkimer County with a rate of 5.3%.
