FREETOWN, Sierra Leone — An oil tanker exploded near Sierra Leone’s capital, killing at least 92 people and hurting many others. The tank exploded because people came to collect the leaking fuel.
A gas tanker exploded after it was hit by a bus. The explosion happened on Friday night in Wellington, the east part of Freetown.
92 bodies had been brought into Connaught Hospital by Saturday morning.30 victims of the fire were severely burned and not expected to survive. This is according to a staff member who works in the hospital’s intensive care unit.

Some people’s clothes burned off when they were hurt. They are on stretchers, and nurses are helping them. Hundreds of people are standing outside the hospital, waiting for information about their loved ones who might be inside.
We do not know how many people are in treatment for burns because they went to different hospitals and clinics.
A video that the Associated Press got showed the aftermath of an explosion. It was burning, and some people were crying. There were also burned remains on the ground.
President Julius Maada, who was in Scotland for the United Nations Climate talks, felt bad about the loss of life. He said that it was a “horrendous” amount of people who were killed.
“I want to tell you how sorry I am for all of the people who died in the explosion and also for those who were hurt,” he said on Twitter.
The Vice President visited two hospitals in the night. He said that people would work hard to deal with the emergency.
