7-Strong DLA Piper Spanish Team Heads to US Firm

7-Strong DLA Piper Spanish Team Heads to US Firm (1)

Squire Patton Boggs is adding a team of lawyers who do business deals. They are from DLA Piper, which is in Madrid. It will have seven people on the team.

People from Squire’s European managing partner Jonathan Jones said that these hires are part of a plan to expand the firm. They also plan to add more strength in Paris, Milan, and Frankfurt.

Teresa Zueco is a lawyer who has been at DLA Piper for more than nine years. She joins the firm on Friday as Spain managing partner.

Joining Zueco are legal directors Pablo García and Rocío García, and associates Alejandra Castaneda, Luis Gutierrez, Alvaro Luaces and Monica Sebares.

The team hire comes as people are confident about the European PE market. This is because there are fewer COVID-19 restrictions in Europe, which means that more people want to buy things like houses and businesses.

Jonathan Jones, a partner at Squire’s European managing partner, said: “Our PE business is going very well. We have invested a lot of money in corporate and PE in London.” This has been successful, and so they need to have offices in a place where they can meet the needs of the PE work that is happening.

The firm is in talks with lawyers in Paris. The goal is to work together and do big projects. They want to go to Milan and Frankfurt too.

Zueco said that upscaling will allow Squire to compete more easily with rivals like Hogan Lovells, Baker McKenzie, and DLA Piper.

When new recruits join, they will make the company 36 people. This means it is a very big company.

Once Zueco joins, the firm’s current Spain managing partner, Rafael Alonso, will move into a new role. He will become the senior regional partner.

DLA and Squire have been fighting on the Spanish hiring market since DLA took over one of Squire Sanders’ 25-lawyer teams in 2005.

This year, DLA added four people to their finance team. They also came from KPMG Law’s Spain practice.

The DLA Piper spokesperson said, “We would like to thank Teresa for her contribution to the firm. She leaves us with a solid team in Madrid. That team is very good at helping clients succeed both in Spain and around the world.”
